Whopping new Crimson Desert video sharpens suspicion that it’s a really shonky Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Crimson Desert has been stirring up a fair bit of conversation lately, and for good reason. When I first dove into the game, I found myself puzzled by its identity. Is it evoking the free-running style of Spider-Man, the expansive storytelling of The Witcher, the high-octane action of Dynasty Warriors, or perhaps the magic of Dragon’s Dogma? With its latest video from developer Pearl Abyss, however, the game’s essence is becoming increasingly clear.

At its core, Crimson Desert presents itself as a darker, medieval fantasy twist on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The environments, particularly those aerial ruins, give off strong vibes that are hard to ignore. It’s as if the game is trying to capture a similar sense of exploration and adventure but falls short when it comes to the same level of polish and coherence found in its iconic counterpart. Sure, it misses the mark on having a sophisticated vehicle editor, but that’s hardly where the story ends.

What we see in the footage further solidifies an impression that many players have already begun to share; for all of its ambition, Crimson Desert seems to struggle with delivering a seamless experience. The visuals and mechanics hint at a grand adventure, yet there’s a lingering sense of unfinished business lurking beneath the surface. As we await more content and gameplay details, one can’t help but wonder if this title may ultimately deliver an experience reminiscent of Zelda, but miss the mark on its charm and depth.

If you haven’t yet caught sight of the new video, it’s worth taking a moment to check it out. It certainly raises more questions than answers about what Crimson Desert aims to be, but it’s shaping up to be one of the more intriguing titles to watch for next year. The potential is there, and only time will tell if it can carve out its own identity.
