Shockwaves, we miss you. Please come back to Fortnite

Epic Games recently removed shockwaves from Fortnite, citing that they made it too simple for players to slip out of fights. It’s an understandable move—shockwaves were notoriously good at turning the tide in tense moments by enabling quick escapes or unpredictable rotations. But the decision feels like a blunt instrument when the underlying problem is more nuanced.

Shockwaves didn’t just help with retreats; they added a layer of fluidity to combat that rewarded creativity and timing. Without them, engagements can feel more static, less dynamic. Removing shockwaves might reduce some of the frustration of losing fights because of rapid escapes, but it also takes away a tool that contributed to Fortnite’s unique pace.

The real challenge is finding ways to balance mobility gadgets without stripping away what makes the gameplay exciting. Maybe Epic could have adjusted shockwaves rather than pulled them entirely. At the moment, their absence creates a noticeable gap in how players move and fight across the map. It’s a reminder that quick fixes can sometimes make things messier than intended. Shockwaves had their flaws, but their presence added a spark to Fortnite’s battles that is sorely missed. Here’s hoping Epic finds a way to bring them back, or something equally engaging, soon.
