Baldur’s Gate 3 won’t be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2, at least not anytime soon. The game’s director at Larian Studios has clarified that the decision isn’t theirs to make. Instead, it’s Wizards of the Coast who hold the reins on whether a port for the upcoming Switch model will ever materialize.
Larian has always been upfront about the technical challenges of bringing such a sprawling RPG to Nintendo’s hardware. Even the original Switch posed hurdles, which the studio overcame only after a significant amount of optimization. Yet, when it comes to the next generation of the console, the ball is firmly in Wizards of the Coast’s court.
This isn’t entirely surprising given Wizards of the Coast’s role as Baldur’s Gate 3’s publisher and owner of the Dungeons & Dragons license. With the Switch 2 still shrouded in mystery, it seems that Larian is taking a pragmatic stance, focusing on platforms where they can guarantee the best experience rather than chasing after unconfirmed hardware.
For now, Switch fans will have to wait and see if Wizards decides to greenlight a version that could bring Baldur’s Gate 3 to smaller screens once again. Until then, the absence of a Switch 2 port isn’t a reflection of Larian’s willingness, but rather a matter of licensing and strategic decisions beyond the studio’s control.
