Former ZeniMax Online devs form Ironroot Games following “traumatising” layoffs

In the wake of Microsoft’s sweeping layoffs in July 2025, some of the hardest hit came from ZeniMax Online Studios. Among those departing was principal gameplay designer Quentin Cobb, who faced not only the shock of losing his job but also the harsh reality of a saturated and unforgiving job market. Rather than waiting out the storm, Cobb joined forces with former colleagues to launch Ironroot Games, a new studio born from the turbulence.

The layoffs were described as traumatising by those affected, a stark reminder of the volatility even seasoned developers face in the industry. Ironroot Games stands as a testament to resilience, a fresh start by creators determined to move beyond uncertainty and carve out their own space in gaming’s ever-shifting landscape.
