Developers: Please give me the option to remove swear words from your games

In a time when accessibility features have become a cornerstone of game design, one simple option still seems to be glaringly absent: the ability to remove swear words from dialogue. It’s a feature that would make a lot of sense for parents wanting to enjoy games alongside their kids, or for anyone who prefers a cleaner audio experience without having to mute the whole thing.

Developers have made tremendous strides with customizable subtitles, difficulty tweaks, colorblind modes, and more, but censoring profanity remains a rare sight. Even some of the most family-friendly titles include language that might prompt a quick volume adjustment or an awkward excuse. If studios continue to embrace accessibility in all its forms, why not give players the choice to tone down the language as well?

This isn’t about dumbing down content or stifling creative expression. It’s about recognizing that players consume stories in very different contexts. Offering a toggle to filter out strong language could open games to more players and moments where they might otherwise stay silent. Given how far the industry has come with flexible settings, this feels like a feature that’s overdue. Here’s hoping developers hear the call and make the option a standard part of their accessibility toolkit.
