Cyberpunk 2077 VR modder doesn’t rule out releasing it for free after DMCA, claims there was “no negotiation” with CD Projekt

Luke Ross, the modder behind the ambitious VR overhaul for Cyberpunk 2077, has swung back into the conversation after CD Projekt issued a DMCA takedown against his work. The controversy revolved around the fact that Ross’s R.E.A.L VR mod, which adds full VR support to Cyberpunk 2077 and several other titles, was locked behind a paywall. CD Projekt quickly moved to remove it, citing their fan content guidelines which encourage free distribution or optional donations instead of outright paywalls.

Ross has since hinted that he hasn’t ruled out eventually releasing the mod for free, but he makes clear it’s not a straightforward decision anymore. With the mod now out in the wild unofficially thanks to piracy, he argues the whole discussion has become somewhat irrelevant. He also claims there was no meaningful negotiation with CD Projekt before the takedown, contradicting the studio’s public remarks suggesting they offered him a path to comply by dropping the paywall.

This situation underscores the tensions that can arise when passionate modders try to monetize their work on major releases, especially in VR where such mods are still relatively rare and technically demanding. For now, the future of the Cyberpunk VR mod remains uncertain, caught between fan enthusiasm, legal boundaries, and the realities of online distribution.
