In a bittersweet turn of events for fans of classic platformers, Keiji Inafune’s studio Comcept has officially shut its doors. Established in 2010, the studio was born out of lofty ambitions and a desire to recapture the spirit of beloved gaming franchises. However, the journey has been marred by stumbles and setbacks, leaving a complicated legacy.
Comcept rose to prominence with the Kickstarter campaign for Mighty No. 9, which was intended to be a spiritual successor to the Mega Man series that Inafune helped create. Expectations were high, driven by nostalgia and the promise of a return to form for 2D action platforming. Yet, the final product failed to hit the mark for many players. While the Kickstarter raised millions, the end result was met with disappointment, and it felt like a far cry from the excitement that had initially surrounded its development.
This decline wasn’t solely due to the misfire of one project. Following the launch of Mighty No. 9, Comcept struggled to recapture its momentum. The studio attempted to pivot with other projects, but none managed to reignite the spark that drew fans to Inafune’s vision in the first place.
