Highguard is fine when you don’t have an internet in your ear telling you it’s nasty

Highguard is one of those games that shows clear craftsmanship, with thoughtful design and solid mechanics. It’s a well-made title that knows exactly what it wants to be, and it mostly succeeds on its own terms. Yet, despite its qualities, I can’t imagine it becoming a go-to for many players.

The problem is less about the game itself and more about what accompanies the experience. When you’re not constantly bombarded by the online chatter warning you it’s somehow nasty or off-putting, Highguard can feel like a neat, contained world to explore. Without that noise, it holds up fine. But once the internet’s critical voice gets involved, it drags the whole thing down, creating barriers unlikely to exist in the game’s actual content.

In essence, Highguard is solid, but it’s tough to shake the feeling that it won’t stick with folks long-term. It’s a good game that hasn’t quite managed to capture the staying power to make it a regular habit.
