Luke Ross, the modder behind the ambitious Cyberpunk 2077 R.E.A.L VR framework, has reportedly been hit with a second DMCA strike. This time it’s coming from 505 Games, the publisher of Ghostrunner, forcing Ross to temporarily pause his Patreon.
Previously, CD Projekt took down Ross’ Cyberpunk VR mod following complaints over its paywall, which led to some serious questions about mod monetization. While that takedown was clearly tied to the pay-to-access model, the reasons behind 505 Games’ move remain unclear. Ross hasn’t indicated whether the latest claim relates to monetization or something else in his work.
The whole situation highlights the fraught space where fan-driven content and intellectual property collide, especially when money is involved. For now, fans of the VR mod will have to wait and see how this plays out, and how it may impact community projects that push the boundaries of established games.
