Playground Games’ upcoming Fable reboot won’t feature the classic character morphing that had many a villainous hero sprouting devil horns or glowing red eyes. The studio has decided to drop those overt physical changes that reflected how wicked or virtuous you were, a choice rooted in their desire to explore morality in a more nuanced way. Instead of a clear-cut system where being a total arsehole turns you into a walking monster, the game will use a regionally focused reputation system. The idea is to capture how morality feels subjective and complex in the real world, rather than relying on obvious visual cues to mark you as good or bad. It’s a bold move that might surprise longtime fans who loved seeing their characters’ appearances warp with their deeds, but Playground Games seems keen to tell a story where shades of grey matter more than black and white. The game is due out this autumn.
