Microsoft is pushing hard for generative AI to become a part of everyday life, promising it will multiply our productivity tenfold. Yet even within its own game studios, the uptake among developers is patchy at best. Take the team behind Elder Scrolls Online, for example. Executive producer Susan Kath shared that while tools like Copilot have found a place in helping with meetings, summaries, and organizing inboxes, they have yet to pinpoint where generative AI fits into actual game development.
When it comes to art, coding, or writing, the ESO team remains cautious. They haven’t integrated AI into those creative processes yet and are still debating what, if any, role it should play moving forward. Kath noted that the studio is full of strong opinions on the topic, which reflects a broader uncertainty despite Microsoft’s significant investments in AI technology. It’s clear that, at least for now, game development remains a space where enthusiasm for AI doesn’t always translate into immediate adoption.
