Some of Resident Evil Requiem’s regular zombies remember being alive

Capcom has dropped a fresh look at Resident Evil Requiem through a 13-minute gameplay showcase that focuses as much on tense stealth as it does on visceral combat. Director Koshi Nakanishi walks us through the demo, where about a fifth of the time follows Leon Kennedy as he dispatches zombies with a mix of slick dodge-shoots, well-placed kicks to the head, and heavy melee weapons like a chainsaw and a hatchet—the latter requiring occasional resharpening, which adds a neat touch of resource management to the frenzy.

But the real twist comes with Grace, a new playable character who approaches the horror from a completely different angle. Moving in first-person, Grace relies on stealth and subtlety rather than brute force. She’s not exactly a fighter, but armed with a handcannon she uses sparingly when hiding behind ornate furniture isn’t enough to avoid danger. Capcom has framed her as the cold, controlled counterpart to Leon’s hotter, more action-oriented style.

The gameplay also hints at a new crafting mechanic where Grace can turn zombie blood into a vaccine. This promises an interesting layer to the survival horror formula, giving players a fresh way to handle the ever-present threat of reanimation. It’s an intriguing blend of suspense and strategy, weaving new tones into Resident Evil’s familiar mix of horror and combat.
