Hytale’s early access launch isn’t quite ready to step out of Minecraft’s shadow, but as a block-loving survival fan I’m still having a blast

Jumping into Hytale’s early access felt like stepping into familiar territory with a fresh twist. I didn’t expect to spend a full hour just crafting my character, but the surprisingly detailed creator pulled me right in. After putting together a blonde, handlebar-mustached, bare-chested leather-clad adventurer who somehow ended up looking more like a pulp hero than the rugged type I had in mind, I finally hit play. From there, the game kept drawing me deeper.

Hytale certainly wears its Minecraft inspiration on its blocky sleeves, but beneath that surface there’s a layered survival experience that feels promising, even if it hasn’t yet completely escaped its shadow. The world is rich, the tools are versatile, and the scope of what’s possible hints at something bigger than just another voxel sandbox. It’s not without rough edges, and at times it’s clear this early access release is still finding its footing. But as someone who’s spent countless hours lost in block-based worlds, I’m enjoying the ride. There’s enough here to satisfy survival fans and spark curiosity about what the full release might bring.
